My biggest fear without a doubt is being stuck in a monotone colored
world resembling an endless sea of office cubicles, where every corner
I turned lead to a path that looked exactly like the area I just came
from. Well for me that was the scariest part of the original F.E.A.R.
video game. Despite the game's great mechanics, engine, and amazing
graphics, the game itself suffered greatly from the simple fact that
from beginning to the end the game never changed. Every enemy was
exactly the same and the only scary parts where the quick little story
related interludes. Well F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin is on its way and
the game has shifted hands from Sierra to Monolith. This time around,
they promise a much more enjoyable experience.
From watching the new trailer we can see that our list of enemies has
finally expanded past mindless soldier drones, and has finally grown
to include the super natural. It appears that we will face a few
zombies and other ghoulish creatures on our path. One new feature to
notice is the game will include new mini-bosses called Remnants. Each
will be a unique character and experience. They seem harmless enough
at first, just poor lost souls stuck in a world they didn't want to be
a part of. Art Lead, Dave Matthews claims the Remnants are "living out
the final moments of their lives over and over until they are
disturbed by an external presence. When that happens, they respond
extremely aggressively." When bothered, the Remnants will use their
powers to resurrect the bodies of the dead around you, thus becoming a
puppet master. Each looks to be a uniquely fun experience and should
provide a good amount of challenge. Try not to let any of that scare
you, the game's incredibly cool feature of allowing you to slow down
the action around you for short periods of time will be making a full
return as well.
If there was one thing F.E.A.R. did right it was the enemy A.I., and
this time around it looks to be even more impressive. Enemies will
actually seek out other, better weapons near by to attack you with if
the opportunity is there. In addition to more intelligent drone
soldiers, Monolith is also promising a more aggressive Alma. You
remember her don't you? She is the cute and incredibly adorable little
girl in the red dress that caused this mess in the first place.
Besides being dead and capable of controlling waves of incredibly
strange and frightening ghouls, she will be on the hunt to make your
life more of a living hell, how cute! The game should also boast much
more robust mechs, both in size and firepower, in this game to take
down or be torn to pieces by.
