The Xbox Live Community Games format definitely knows how to show off a user's creativity and ingenuity. One of the things it also does is take popular concepts from a multitude of different games and combine them into one. Awesome Tank, from developer UberGeekGames, is one of them. From my perspective, it's a combination of a few classic arcade games including Bomberman, Combat, and dare I say Pac-Man. Now that is some good company, and Awesome Tank executes some of these ideas rather well.

Awesome Tank puts you in control of a lone tank against insurmountable odds. Now is it me, or is this plot quite common with games like this. Each battle takes place on a Bomberman-like grid featuring three different environments: Desert, Snow, and a futuristic environment that resembles the tank mini-game in Tron. Your mission soldier is to either destroy all the enemy tanks, or collect all the green pellets on the grid. Remember to stay frosty soldier, because while the idea sounds pretty easy, the enemy tanks will show no mercy towards you. I would suggest keeping your finger on the trigger and act quickly.

Each stage features obstacles to maneuver around, or destroy, as well as plenty of power-ups for you to take advantage of. Power-ups include Extra Speed which gives your tank a much needed turbo boost (plus a cool NASCAR stock car sound effect), Fast Bullets which increases your firing speed, Extra Ammo which allows your tank to fire more than one shot, and Extra Lives which show up around every fifth level. While all the power-ups are useful, the extra ammo helps out alot due to the fact that your tank can only fire one shot at a time and you must wait for the shot to actually hit something (obstacle or enemy tank) before you can fire again.

Awesome Tank is the kind of game where getting the high score is the priority. Points can be collected from destroying tanks and collecting pellets. There is also a timer counting down, so you might want to finish each level as quickly as possible to attain a higher score. You'll also find the games unique twist on achievements called awardments. Like all Xbox Live Community Games, these awards don't boost your gamerscore, but they do give you the satisfaction of proving how awesome you are compared to all the noobs out there. To help prove your superiority, Awesome Tank does feature full leaderboard support.

One of the great things about Awesome Tank is the fact that you don't have to take on the enemy all alone. That's right, you and a friend can wreak havoc in cooperative play. This co-op action is available both locally or on Xbox Live. Now you can work together to destroy the forces of evil, or just collect all the pellets. Better yet, let's see who's better at the game by achieving the higher score. Awesome Tank features endless possibilities and plenty of replay value.

Graphically, Awesome Tank looks alot like a Nintendo 64 game. That's not a bad thing at all, because it still looks pretty good. The game is presented in an isometric 3D view and can be switched from a blimp-like view of the whole grid or you can get close up on the action. Speaking of close-ups, when you destroy the last tank in a level, it will zoom in on it's destruction. Of course this also works the other way around as well if you are destroyed. Each level also features destructible environments and shows good effects like explosions, smoke, pieces of debris, and more. You'll even see a hint of lighting around power-up objects so that you can see where they are.

Awesome Tank in a word is...well..."Awesome." It truly lives up to it's name in terms of its fun gameplay, co-op multiplayer, and endless replay value. This is a game you can't afford to pass up on. Fans of games like Bomberman will love it. Even if your not a fan of Bomberman, I still suggest giving Awesome Tank a demo run, you might in fact like the game enough to spend 400 Microsoft Points ($5.00) on it.
