When I first arrived on the scene I was welcomed onto a very large show floor aligned with scattered draperies which served as the barricades separating panels all over the floor. The first thing I would like to state is that this is my first convention ever, and thus I can’t really tell you whether this was so much better or so much worse than any other convention. However, what I can tell you is that Infinite Bits was a fantastically fun and enjoyable experience, especially considering this was its first year. Being a college student I was not able to really make it to the first days event (I’m sure if you head over to the forums you can read more on Day 1), but despite that I felt like I hadn’t missed anything, there was just so much to offer! The Saturday event started at 10:00 a.m. and I arrived at approximately 10:30 putting me about 30 minutes into the action. But this was still around setup time so I was able to check out the gaming arena and play some games of my own while the festivities got underway. Unlike most conventions that seek to bring knew information to the forefront of the industry through extravagant and dramatic press releases, Infinite Bits seek to strike a more simple, albeit nostalgic and competitive tone which is apparent from the moment that you walk into the convention (which was being held at the Miami Doubletree Hotel). When you look around Infinite Bits you won’t see all of the great booths marked with symbols of the greatest producers and developers. Instead you see what you should, games. However, not just the games that you would expect, not just the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii, but there are also games of every genre, variety, and style. We’ve got the Neo Geo, the Virtual Boy, the DS, the PipPin, the CD-i, the Gamecube, PS2, Xbox, and just about everything else you can think of. BigAnt and I took a tour of the show floor where we were able to play some of the most fun arcade games ever made. But that’s all just the icing on the cake. SFX-360 was at the event hosting our gaming tournaments so that all of those who thought that they were so great in Halo 3, Gears of war 2, or the original Halo could strut their stuff for real cash prizes. But there was still more! For the show we all got to explore the vending area where they were selling all the sorts of from games to anime to random Japanese snacks (Pallidian introduced me to “pocky”). Also at the show they had special guests Egoraptor, of the online series of “awesome” videos. He was there to tell us about his work and to basically just have a good time talking to everyone. I also got acquainted to Ben Heckendorn, better known as Ben Heck, creator of many modded videogame systems like the Xbox Laptop and the one-handed controller. In addition to these great moments I also got to shake hands with Billy Mitchell, the King of Kong, and we even got a bottle of signed Billy Mitchell hot sauce (Seriously ask Pallidian, its randomly awesome)! Overall the convention was a blast and I know for sure I’ll be there for more fun.
